Pathric Hägglund, PhD in economics, and Pär Johansson, statistics professor at the University of Uppsala , enter the debate article five proposals to deal with fluctuations in absenteeism. The fluctuations have nothing to do with the actual health of the population, they write in Dagens Nyheter.

In order to alleviate these problems, scientists have five suggestions.

A maximum time limit is necessary, among other things, it sends a signal that sick leave can not last forever. It runs on all parties to try to find a solution, the researchers said. In February this year was the deadline of 2.5 years away. But scientists believe rather that a shorter deadline than necessary.

It is doubtful benefits of early intervention, the researchers and they should therefore be limited.

Social Insurance should also set quality standards for the health care provider printing sick note, for example, doctors should have some knowledge of how work is assessed.

There should also be more expensive for employers on sick leave, to increase the momentum for prevention work.

Politicians’ influence of health insurance should also be limited, the researchers write in the debate the article.
