More and more Swedes are affected by dengue – Swedish Dagbladet

In January this year reported 44 cases of Swedes infected by dengue abroad, compared with 26 cases in January 2015. Of those infected by more than half, 55 percent, in Thailand.

– The ongoing large outbreak of dengue in Thailand where many Swedes traveling right now. Almost all provinces reporting cases, particularly the popular tourist destination, says Elsie Ydring, a molecular biologist at the Public Health Agency.

Just as Zika, and chikungunya is Dengue a mosquito-borne disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti which is common in the tropics.

Some vaccines are not, but it’s best to protect yourself with insect repellent and comprehensive clothing, says the Public Health Agency. Especially in the evenings and nights, when mosquitoes are most active. Mosquito net above the bed is also recommended.

– You do not have thick clothes, but overall is definitely nice to have, says Elsie Ydring.

The symptoms are mainly fever, joint and muscle aches and rash. Very serious illness with shock that can lead to death also occurs, although it is rare.

Whether any Swedish have died of dengue, do not know Elise Ydring as the Public Health Agency does not have such statistics.
