All clear after gas leak at Chalmers – Aftonbladet

Part of Chalmers evacuated after gas leaked into a local chemistry section.

Now is the acute danger is over and there is no longer a risk of fire.

We’re still working to find and secure the leak.

– Somewhere, there has been a leak in the tube that goes in, says Mats Karlsson on the emergency services.

the alarm came to the police and emergency services in Gothenburg at 10:08 on Tuesday.

– There is a high fire and explosion hazard. The entire building has been evacuated and some extra safety distance, said Christer Fuxborg, police spokesman for the Western Region, to Aftonbladet earlier.

There were fears that the leak was on the third floor of the CTH, chemistry section at Chalmers University of Technology.

– it’s a closed room so that you can not just open the window and air out the gas, said Christer Fuxborg.

evacuated

Police and rescue services evacuated parts of the building before you could say that the danger was over. Chalmers Students Lowe Larsson was one of those evacuated.
– We went out with once, but then they said it was quiet so we went back. Then the alarm. We did not really know what we would do, he says.
Were you afraid?
– No, it sounds more dangerous than it is.
Joakim Gustafsson, who also studying at Chalmers, argues that it is not unusual that the alarm goes off at school.
– Fire alarm often goes, nine out of ten times it’s like this. It is the third time this year as it is the emergency here, says Joakim Gustafsson.

At 11.30 o’clock announced Christer Fuxborg that the situation is under control. When the fire went into the room to measure the amount of natural gas in the room it appeared that nothing more was leaked.

– It seems that the danger is over. You can return to study, research or whatever you do in these premises.

Leak on line

Mats Karlsson was the team leader during the rescue operation and confirms to Aftonbladet that there was a leak on natural gas line into the building.

– Somewhere, there has been a leak in the tube that enters. Where we do not know, it’s for work that may verify and find the leak, says Karlsson.

Was there ever a risk of fire or explosion?

– not as long as we’ve been there and been able to measure. When it has not been in such concentrations that there has been an explosion hazard. But if it’s been there before, we do not know. They closed the course of the gas and then aired it before we went in, says Mats Karlsson.

At lunchtime was still working in the premises.

– Now they will start looking for the leak. The collateral it before they can release the business again, says Karlsson.
