Culex torrentium, a species of mosquito that only suck blood from birds, plays a key role in the spread of the so-called Ockelbo disease, according to new research at Uppsala University.
– The fact that several percent of torrentiummyggen infected this sindbidvirus to be seen as exceptionally high, says Jan Lundström, mosquito expert at the University, Uppsala Nya Tidning.
The mosquitoes infect birds, which become reservoirs for the virus – which can then reach people through other mosquitoes.
Ockelbo disease characterized by fever, red rash and joint pain. At about a quarter of the patients gives lifelong arthritis.
