Difficult for boaters to follow the law of toatömning – Swedish Radio

The possibilities for sailboats and motorboats to dispose of their sewage in a lawful manner is bad, because many ports lack emptying stations.

Since April 1 this year is the team that marine toilets must be emptied into special tanks in the harbor, and not be discharged into lakes and seas.

But in many ports there is no emptying stations. In total there are over 1000 marinas in Sweden, but there are only 270 dump stations, according to a survey by the Swedish Transport Agency has done.

In addition, there have only been 30 plants since last year, before the law came into force.

It is too little, , according to Lina Petersson, administrator at the Swedish Transport Agency of issues related to sewage from pleasure craft.

– Each port has a responsibility to ensure to be able to return their waste, says Lina Petersson.

She calls boaters to report to the Agency if they are going to a port lacks a discharge station because Transport Agency then require that the port will arrange one.

Since the Act came into force, the Transport Agency received 40 such notifications.

– Refusing to build a draining station can be it will be fine for the port, says Lina Petersson.

Transport Agency could threaten with fines and periodic penalty payments are always higher than what it would cost to build the device needed. A discharge station of normal size costs about SEK 150 000.

Transport Agency anticipates that approximately 100,000 pleasure boats in Sweden have the need to empty their toilets in the harbor.

in Sörmland are the emptying stations in Nävekvarn, Nyköping, Oxelösund, thong, Strangnas, Torshälla and Sundbyholm, according to the information Transportation Board.

But there may also be ports that are emptying stations without having notified it to the Authority , according to Lina Petersson.

Here you can see Transport Agency map of emptying stations in Sweden’s ports.
