For the first time in 18 years, striped dolphins have been found in Swedish waters. Two copies, both apparently males, stranded at the weekend on the Onsala peninsula south of Gothenburg.
– Normally, they are found in tropical and temperate waters. You can really think about how they ended up here in February. Maybe they followed a school of fish and went astray, says Anders Nilsson, a biologist at the Gothenburg Natural History Museum, said.
When Anders Nilsson came to the wreck site were both dead dolphins. How they died is still unclear.
– There was no AC or propeller damage to the bodies. Both also looked to be in good body condition. There is a bit of a mystery, says Anders Nilsson.
The dolphins were brought to Natural History in Gothenburg but will then be sent to the Natural History Museum of the investigation in cooperation with the National Veterinary Institute.
