The unequal society is also evident in our street names. Not only just one of seven streets have women’s names. Men’s streets are additionally longer than women.
Constructed environments and public places can both reflect and reinforce cultural values and norms in society, for example on gender equality, reasoned Statistics Sweden (SCB) and went to work to investigate street signs with personal names.
Just under 2400 signs latter is state unequivocally: Approximately 2,060 were male and 330 female (about 14 percent).
– Historical reasons are the biggest reason. It’s old streets simply, the name attached perhaps several hundred years ago, says Marcus Justesen working with spatial analysis at Statistics Sweden.
But the skewed sex ratio also applies streets renamed the past seven years. Three to four times more men give names to streets than women. In addition, the average length of man’s streets has increased slightly to 452 meters, while the women’s streets become shorter and canapés now 380 meters.
– It is very difficult to say why this is so. One should probably point out that the old structures remain, says Marcus Just the way.
Only five municipalities have more female than male street name: Sodertalje, Sävjö, Uppvidinge, Emmaboda and Överkalix.
