Dozen cars burned in a garage in Hammarkullen – Swedish Radio

A dozen cars began to burn in a parking garage in Hammarkullen in Gothenburg. The rescue went in with firemen – and considered to evacuate the residents. Shortly before 02:00 the fire was extinguished.

The alarm came in shortly after midnight on Christmas Eve of heavy smoke in a parking garage on Bredfjällsgatan in Hammarkullen, Gothenburg.

– The garage is located in a house with several apartments and right now the smoke spread up the stairwell. We have gone in with firemen working to try to extinguish the fire. It is estimated that about a dozen cars set alight, says Anders Helmborn, alarm – and lead operator at the emergency command center to P4 Gothenburg.

Six stations were working on the fire. Smoke spread to three stairwells in the building and fire fighters worked on trying to prevent the smoke from spreading.

Around 02:00 at night so had emergency services managed to extinguish the bilbränderna in the garage.

It was also close to the residents of the house were evacuated. A school nearby opened up just in case.

– Now we ventilate the stairwells and garage. We will also keep staff on site throughout the night with after extinguishing, says Lars Larsson, LC-command at the emergency services.

It is currently unclear how the fire started. No person shall have been injured in the fire, but there is evidence that a person possibly got into the smoke in the stairwell.
