58 gunshot victims in 18 months

July 25, 2013, Oxledsvägen in Sävedalen
A 28-year old man was walking her dog in Sävedalen. Then fired several shots at him and he was hit in both the leg and chest. He was taken to hospital but his life could not be saved. No one has been convicted of murder.
7 October 2013, Fjällbinkan in Rannebergen
A man in their 30s were found shot in the stairwell of Fjällbinkan in Rannebergen. Before he found on the ground floor, he had gone and pulled the doors in the stairwell for assistance. The man was taken to hospital and he died later. No one has been arrested for the murder.

Between January 2013 until and June 2014 shot wounded 58 people in Gothenburg. Of these, 47 people were treated at hospitals, ten died and four were shot in the head. All but one were men – with connections to gangs in Gothenburg. The total treatment time for the gunshot victims was 316 days.
Läkartidningen has now published a study including Hans Granhed, chief physician at Cedars Trauma Care Unit and Sven Alhbin, former director at the county criminal police in Gothenburg, which among other things focused on What shootings cost healthcare.
– There is a new phenomenon with so much gunshot wounds. Most of the shots the damage is fairly simple and non-fatal, 60 percent are shot in the legs and arms. The patients go home after a day or any day. Then you have those who are shot in the head – they go nowhere. Then you have those who are shot in the abdomen and chest, and that can have life-threatening injuries and that takes considerable resources, says Hans Granhed.
The direct hospital costs of the 57 people who were taken to hospitals is estimated at 6.154 million crowns, with an average cost per patient of 108 000.
– Median per patient is that it nurtured for two days, there are a few patients who pulls the big resources, says Hans Granhed.
Gang Related
Sven Alhbin, now retired police chief of the county police, confirming that the shootings that have been part of the review have been gang-related in different ways.
– It accelerated in particular, from spring, summer onwards and after the fatal shooting of Väderilsgatan in September we went in again with our special event. After that, we believe that there was an increase in gang conflicts, it became denser and hätskare and even more who died, says Sven Alhbin.

He says that the event represented an escalation in gang conflicts, much of it ignored the right of a third party had been reached.
– But that it happened at that time was probably just a coincidence. It has been built up in periods where, among other things, conflict between gangs in the southern and northern bishop’s palace plays a role, says Alhbin and adds:
– What is the reason that the number of shootings of injured and killed has increased, one can only speculate in. We had far more shootings in the past where there was more damage, since it has been accelerated by having shot against each other in which third parties have been killed, for example on Vårväderstorget this year.
Two strong elements
He believes that there are mainly two strong underlying motives for gang shootings.
– There are two elements that I see it, both personal enmity between leading individuals and a criminal part where you fought each other in aim to achieve power over such drug market.
Of the 58 people who was shot during the 18 months in 2013 and 2014 killed ten people, four of whom were shot in the head.
– The tendency is to come closer to the postponing, more or less execute than the injury shoot. Somewhere it has become oförsonligare and measure of revenge will be higher, because there are so many acts of revenge. Somewhere in that case the events as a result of what happened before. I’m not even sure that those involved know why anymore, says the former county criminal boss.
According to Hans Granhed it is important to increase the competence in trauma surgery. He also believes that trauma care that treats shot injuries have collected better.
– You have to collect trauma care on fewer sites to gather expertise, so that gathers healthcare to all go to the same places.
Different gangs in different hospitals
But aside from the lack of expertise and the high costs mean His Granhed that there are other issues regarding the care of those shots injured in gang war footsteps.
– It has happened that they have put various gangs at different hospitals because they will not have to meet. And when they shall have the visit so it is not always easy to know which ones are appropriate and inappropriate visits. Sometimes we need to take the help of, among other things, guardians and sometimes we have police there to protect the injured. Since it is a fact that the injured may not themselves God’s best children, there is often a certain discomfort part to work with it.
What do you think are the main conclusions of the study?
– If you look politically it is a large and unnecessary kostad that interferes with the usual care and you might stop another planned activities. All gunshot wounds are not fatal, but it needed a greater awareness to be taken care of, says Hans Granhed.
