More contract gonorrhea when fewer have condom – Swedish Radio

Gender disease gonorrhea becoming more prevalent in Sweden, according to a report from the Public Health Agency. In 2014 discovered 20 percent more gonorrhea cases than the year before.

– We have seen that gonorrhea has come back after having been virtually extinct, says Carl Båve, counselor at Södermalm youth clinic in Stockholm.

In the last year discovered 1336 cases of gonorrhea in Sweden, which is about 20 percent more than in 2013. It is condom use, or non- use instead, which is probably the culprit.

– The risk of becoming infected with HIV is so small, I think it’s the way you think, that it is not and the other is just a pill, says Kajsa chip Ager , director of the department of infection, the Venhälsan.

But that one “becomes healthy with a pill” is a truth with modifications. More and more strains of bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Some STDs can also lead to scarring and give later effects on the uterus, fallopian tubes and prostate.

There are disadvantages that not many think of, though gonorrhea are curable today.

The condom is still best protection, but how to get people to use condoms is a difficult question. Kajsa chip Ager would not suggest scaremongering.

– It succeeded after all when HIV came when it was very much scaremongering. But it is a shame if you have to use scare tactics in order to take care of herself, she says.

A great deal of gonorrhea cases in the last year were detected in men who have sex with men. To reach young men, regardless of orientation, is a key issue if we want to curb the number of sick.

– We have for many years said that it is good to come and test themselves, which we have succeeded. But I think that we have a way failed to get young people to use condoms more, says Carl Båve on Södermalm’s youth clinic in Stockholm.
