Right now you can see across the Swedish participation in the EU rescue Triton in the Mediterranean and it is likely that Sweden will send further help.
– Today we have a ship in the Mediterranean Sea, Poseidon, who has saved 2,874 lives and the future planning, we are planning two smaller boats and a surveillance aircraft to be able to contribute to the rescue efforts in the Mediterranean, says Interior Minister Anders Ygeman.
This year so far has more than 137 000 people rescued in the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to escape conflicts and wars. Of them have at least 1800 minimum life. Since the spring, Sweden had one of the Coast Guard vessel, the Poseidon, on hand to help.
Now lean it for more boats and surveillance aircraft from the Coast Guard will strengthen relief efforts, it reports the Daily News today.
Pia Berglund, CEO of the Swedish Maritime welcomes Government notice, for she sees the current situation where the Swedish merchant can help out is not sustainable.
– The ships are not built, suited or equipped for it so my worst fear is that a Swedish trading vessel to be involved and that there itne to go well, it would be awful for our members, crew and for the refugees. It is my nightmare that we will end up in a situation where it does not go well, she says.
However, if and when it may be necessary that efforts be sent away is unclear Anders Ygeman think it may be in the fall or winter but there are waiting for news from the EU. For even if the Swedish government wants to send down more help then it is ultimately the EU oganisation Frontex, which decides if it will be so.
– Sweden has been a driving force for the EU to increase rescue operations in the Mediterranean and we obviously want participate and contribute to saving lives, says Anders Ygeman.
