In the first half of the year, over 4,500 unaccompanied children and young people seeking asylum in Sweden. An increase of 85 percent compared with the same period last year, the largest number ever.
The residents places the Swedish Migration Board has agreed with the municipalities if not enough. Therefore, all municipalities are now having to accept more unaccompanied.
– This means that municipalities which take a great responsibility today will receive even more children, says Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director General of the Swedish Migration Board.
According to the law unaccompanied children and adolescents primarily allocated to municipalities as they have some connection to, and secondarily to municipalities that have an agreement on the acceptance by the Swedish Migration Board. But when that’s not enough, the Authority may resort to coercion, according to a new law passed last year.
Already in June alloted Finnish Immigration children and adolescents to municipalities that do not accept unaccompanied voluntarily. But now, even the seats filled.
Starting this week , all municipalities in the country therefore need to accommodate more children and young people. How many depends on the number of inhabitants in the municipality and the number of asylum seekers who have previously received. The larger the municipality, the smaller the reception, the more unaccompanied, the municipality distributed to itself.
– There will be an additional pressure on municipalities that are already struggling quite hard for these children to get the best conditions possible says Helene Nellvik, administrator of the social child and youth care at the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.
Force Act has already been used once, in November last year. When did each municipality receive two “extra” unaccompanied. How many it will be about for years do not know the Swedish Migration Board yet.
– But there are so many children that it most likely will affect all municipalities, says Mikael Ribbenvik.
The main reason that the new law was introduced was that many municipalities do not receive enough unaccompanied. The richer the municipality, the fewer refugees are received, showed SvD’s review. But after the amendment, several municipalities have increased their reception.
Although there is not enough places.
– Now most municipalities agreements, but not at all on par with how many are coming, says Helene Nellvik.
The municipalities are paid retrospectively from the Swedish Migration Board for each asylum-seekers they receive, but in many municipalities, the payment is not enough.
Record number of unaccompanied
This year, 4,544 unaccompanied children and young people seeking asylum in Sweden, more than ever before. Just last week, the Swedish Migration Board received 413 applications.
According to the Migration Board’s latest forecast, the 8000 children and young people to seek asylum in total this year. A new forecast will come next week, and Migration Board has already announced that it will be adjusted up.
With unaccompanied children and adolescents refers to everyone under 18 seeking asylum themselves in Sweden without parents or other guardians.
