Healthy seals along the west coast – Swedish Radio

Last year, hit hard against the seals along the west coast which was hit by a comprehensive säldöd. But this year looks bright.

The seals seem to have recovered after last year virus outbreak. According to Tero Härkönen who is a researcher at the Natural History Museum is 75 percent of the seals are now immune to the disease.

-The previous epidemics we have seen have all had its beginning in the period between March and June. Now we have passed the border and have not seen anything that suggests something new outbreaks, he said.

Between March and December last year found about 450 dead seals along the west coast, so even in Halland. Unusual number of dead seals were also found in Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany.

The seals had been infected by the bird flu virus that has spread to mammals for the first time.
