“Bowler hat” found in the royal tomb – Aftonbladet

"Bowler hat" found in the royal tomb – Aftonbladet

They have been hiding in Kungagraven Kivik over 3300 years.

Now, archaeologists have found nine unique carvings in the ancient monument – two “bowler.”

– There is a new symbol, says Andreas Toreld, one of the specialists behind the find.

It all started four years ago.

Andreas Toreld was at Kungagraven Kivik under a completely different mission when he discovered a inscription on one of the stones.

At a closer look, it turned out to imagine a human figure.

Toreld became curious and together with his colleague Tommy Andersson, he applied for funds to investigate the remaining seven outcrops.

– Strangely, nobody had noticed the picture before. The outcrops have been arrived for public display for 250 years, so it’s a bit odd, he says.

Unexpected discovery: two bowler

A week ago, it was finally time.

In the seven days have Toreld and Andersson was on his knees in tight spaces and polished up image after image. In total, the duo found nine brand new carvings.

– Some of the sensing to the back. Secondly, we found three four-legged animals resembling horses, although they do not completely agree species known. Then we found a picture of a little man who seems to blow in a nap, he has a horn from his mouth. Then we have also re-evaluated some of the previous rationale, says Andreas Toreld.

But perhaps the most astonishing discovery turned out to be – two “bowler.”

– There is a completely new symbol that we have never seen in rock art context before. They are very deeply carved. Usually, if you look after the little narrower lines, the lines are broad see it often appears to be a part of the mountain. So we were a little hesitant when we saw the scene first. But this week, we found an identical image on another stone, says Toreld.

There is not anyone who has been there in modern times and huggt two bowler to push a little with you?

– No, no. They are guaranteed to 3300 years old. They had seen directly if they were nyhuggna.

may be the old hat

But what the strange pictures does leave Andreas Toreld with warm hand over to other experts.

– Me and Tommy are petroglyph specialists and experts to document the inknackningarna. We usually assign themselves to other interpretations.

But Toreld venture still on a small guess:

– They had hats at this time. There are bonsstatyetter which is exactly contemporary where someone has a small brim. They tend to be slightly more pointed than here, but it should not be entirely ruled out that these are some kind of hat. It’s a design that goes back, he says.
