Stjärnmat Milky Way’s fate – Swedish Dagbladet

Stjärnmat Milky Way's fate – Swedish Dagbladet

Researchers reviewed more than 22,000 galaxies in the universe. It turns out that smaller galaxies are good at producing new stars from the gas that is inside the galaxies. The most massive galaxies, however, are not nearly as effective. They grow instead by eating smaller galaxies that are nearby.

– All galaxies start small and grow by accumulating gas as they quite effectively converts into new stars, says Aaron Robotham at The University of Western Australia.

Our own galaxy is no exception. It teeters between that grow on their own and turn into a cannibal.

– The Milky Way has not merged with another galaxy in a long time, but you can see remnants of old galaxies which we have eaten up at one time.

If a so-so four billion years, it is time for the next meal. Then, the researchers believe, will the Milky Way to put themselves two nearby galaxies, Big and Small Magellanic Cloud.

But is wonderful card. Only one billion years later, the “pay back time”. Then we ourselves stjärnmat – to the larger Adromeda galaxy.

The research presented by the Royal Astronomical Society in Britain.
