Investments in chess playing girls – Swedish Radio

The lack of girls playing chess has long been a problem for Chess Federation and not even a tenth of the starting of the Championship, which is going on right now in Sunne are girls. To lift the chess playing girls, the union has received money from the Agency for Youth and civil society.

– Personally, I have experienced much more pressure as a woman. I have to work against these stereotypes that I would be osmartare because I’m a woman or that I play on my looks, says Angelina Fransson, one of the contestants in the SM.

Of the more than 700 starts chess championship in Sunne is only a tenth as played by girls. To increase interest among girls has Chess Federation received more than 400 000 of the Agency for Youth and civil society.

The money will go to a Youth Exchange in Stockholm, Warsaw and Oslo to young chess playing girls, where they will learn more about working professionally with chess and also how they can feed on their interest.

It is far too few girls who see the potential in playing chess, it says Chess Federation Chairman Carl Fredrik Johansson

– Are you looking at adult tournament players, it is in Sweden nearly 95 percent of men and the difference is not good, says Johansson.

Chess Federation has long worked to increase the interest of girls to play. Among the younger chess players it is a much more even distribution between girls and boys, but it is a problem that so few girls continue to play even in adulthood.

– We take it ourselves, it depends on how we are organized and how we take care of the girls who are in the Swedish Chess Federation. In other federations and those who play chess in other countries where there are many more girls playing chess in adulthood, says Carl Fredrik Johansson.

Angelina Fransson hoping for a boost for girls.

– The fact that we rise and say no, now there must be a difference! More girls in committee and more women leaders. Chess Girls who hear this – do not give up hope!
