Jimmie Åkesson has announced his candidacy for a further term as party chairman for the Sweden Democrats in the country meeting in the fall. This after GENTLY returned to the party after his sick leave.
During his absence, the party has been through some of its most dramatic periods. SD chose to violate the budgetary practice and forced a government crisis that forced Prime Minister Stephen Löfven (S) to announce that he would announce extraordinary elections. This in turn led to the historic December agreement, which is currently trying out the whole Alliance but especially Anna Kinberg Batra and the Conservatives, very hard.
But the Sweden Democrats have not only fought with the entire parliamentary system - they even fuzzing peer. A war has been raging between the leadership of deputy party leader Mattias Karlsson and party executive on the one hand, and the far-right nationalist ungdomsfundet SDU on the other. Via a stormy annual meeting for the Stockholm district in SD, it has now culminated in the exclusion of a number of leading SDU are, including its chairman Gustav Kasselstrand and Vice Chairman William Hahne.
The common denominator for both these events are Mattias Karlsson. Karlsson led the party to trap the government budget and has been involved in a personal, political vendetta against the SDU. It will be interesting to see how the power base that Karlsson carved out for itself will be able to coexist with Jimmie Åkesson 2.0.
At the same time as the Jimmie Åkesson's absence proved that the party he helped to lead and develop , actually survived the need Åkesson. The party has not only made it through two major crises, but also increased in the polls. It can be Åkesson's greatest contribution to his party - to get it in black and white that it can do without him.
Åkesson would not re-elected in the fall will be counted as highly unlikely. However, it is still open whether he will be the leading party in the election campaign by 2018.
The Sweden Democrats are now more than Jimmie Åkesson, and reopens the political debate conducted through ideas, not primarily against persons who express them.
