Missed pacemaker exploded at the crematorium – Swedish Radio

A small explosion occurred in the crematorium in Visby, for a pacemaker were left in the body of a deceased cremated. The highly unusual event has now been investigated by the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

– Ten, twelve minutes into kremationen said it bang in the oven, she says.

When the dead man lying there in his coffin in the crematory oven must not be any objects there that can cause injury. A pacemaker’s an electronic device that was implanted to help the heart to fix the pumping of steadier and better. When death is well established, the caregivers mark the death certificate if the person had a pacemaker. It was here that it was wrong when it comes to the death and the dead, whose pacemaker exploded in krematoriehettan.

The nurse who noted his death marked the message to the morgue to the person did not Pace -maker. The result was therefore an explosion in the crematorium.

The incident was reported to the Swedish Work Environment Authority and classified as an “incident” with no injuries. SWEA wanted of course to know how a repeat of that would be avoided, and wanted to know about it.

The health services have for this event provided a metal detector to the morgue in Hemse. In Visby, there were already such equipment. Borje Martell is säkerhetssamordare in health care, and he says that procedures for control has been tightened now.

At Work Environment Authority’s Hakan Angel Dahl pleased with the news that there is now a metal detector, so that the morgue could ascertain that no pacemaker is left in the body.
