Risk of conflict among firefighters – Swedish Radio

Fire-fighters’ National Association portend conflict for some 10 000 part-time firefighters who work around the country. It can cause problems for emergency services from 15 June.

It blows up to the conflict in the rescue labor. Negotiations for a new collective agreement between the Fire-fighters’ Association and the Swedish municipalities and county councils and Pacta have stranded after mediation and are now laying off union of industrial action.

Firemen Unions would, among other things have better working hours and catch up with other municipal employees in terms of pay.

– We have attracted and was insisting, and we’ve begged, and in this round we are almost humiliated in the bid that we received. Now is the last straw simply says Peter Berg, Chair of the Fire-fighters’ Association.

How do you see the risk that there will be a conflict of this?

– As it looks today, I see that it is huge, unfortunately.

There are about 15,000 firefighters in Sweden, of which around 10 000 are part-time employees in smaller communities and rural areas. The notice involves, among other things blockade against that part-time work are added in addition to regular contingency schedule.

– It means really worry, says union president Peter Berg.

It has long been difficult to recruit part-time firefighters and unions are now demanding better working hours so that it will go to local custom schedules. The union also wants holiday entitlement and higher wages. Part-time Firefighters have fallen behind other municipal employees, says Peter Berg.

– It is not about getting more, but about trying to catch up.

What is the requirement in terms of salary?

– A total of 15 per cent over four years.

If the parties do not agree there will be conflict from 15 June. Sweden’s municipalities and county councils have not had time to assess the impact, but the potential for conflict is great according to Agneta Jöhnk, payroll manager at SKL.

– Because we have not reached an agreement even though we have had a mediator inside there is a sizeable risk that the conflict breaks out, she says.
