Terror Offences described as one of the most difficult tasks a police officer may face. According to the national police chief demands more action than the training that is being undertaken, including that police officers must clearly state what is expected of them.

When a terrorist attack in Sweden is the idea that it can quickly be put into various specially trained SWAT teams, but it likely scenario is still that it is ordinary police officers who will be those who are first on the scene. Therefore, ongoing since a few months a training program where they will gain more knowledge about how terrorist acts.

But beyond education also requires clearer information about what the police are expected to do, according to the police chief, Emma Cronberg.

– We see the need for training and mental preparation approach, and of course, we have the right equipment for the job we have to do, she says.

Do you get a lot of reactions and questions from the police about this task?

– Yes, I get absolutely. There are a lot questions, thoughts, and of course so there are a lot of concerns, and it shows the course of a gap there when you do not know.

After the attacks in Denmark and France earlier this year also had Swedish police extended coverage for example at Jewish schools around the country. The conclusion from this effort was that it was initially uncertain whether the task was to make the public feel safer – or if they were expected to intervene if there was an attack.

– If we are to protect ourselves against a supposed acts of terrorism required a completely different mental preparation, and it is a different strain to go into the work situation, compared to only safeguard the public and just talk to them, for example, says Emma Cronberg.

Meanwhile, still very unusual to terrorist attacks, despite the increased risk both in Sweden and other countries. This makes it not reasonable that the police officers are constantly on edge, according to Emma Cronberg.

The conclusion draws even Victor, one of the few Swedish officers with experience of terrorist offenses. who was the first police to arrive when a suicide bomber blew himself to death in Stockholm in 2010.

– If there is an individual who decides to do something similar to what happened on Bryggargatan it is very difficult to check – it will just happen. Then you get to relate to what they have to relate to the location.

– It is difficult to constantly sit prepared for something to happen – then I do not think that it is acting well when it happens . You do not want to live in such a society – where society is always ready to man to become a victim of a terrorist attack. It is not a pleasant living for citizens, or for yourself.
