“The age-tsunami” by 2060 – Sydsvenskan

Last year, average life expectancy is 84 years for women and 80 years for men. 2060 is expected to be 89 and 87 years. The men thus reducing the gap that basically always existed. Of the girls born in 2015 estimated half life of at least 94 years of age. Boys are expected to corresponding age being 92 years.

– Both women and men will be healthier, but men have had a better development with reduced smoking and alcohol consumption. That oral health has improved also very important for overall health, says Yngve Gustafson.

SCB’s numbers put continued pressure on politicians in both parliament as local governments. There will be new discussions about raising the retirement age, but the big problem is the resources to health care for the elderly. Yngve Gustafson is very critical of how the health care works today.

– The level of knowledge about how to treat old people is appallingly low. The most common reason that people over 80 years get sick too high doses, inappropriate drugs and combination of drugs. Another huge problem is that old people who seek care are receiving treatment for symptoms in the form of painkillers, sleeping pills and laxatives instead of to investigate the cause of their pain and sleep problems. The lack of rehabilitation today also leads to very high care needs.
