Government: Judge counterfeiter harder – Metro

The government wants to tighten the maximum penalty from four to six years imprisonment for those found guilty of grave unlawful dealing with fake money, writes the Cabinet Office said in a statement. The amendment is said to be necessary for Sweden to implement an EU directive aimed at strengthening the fight against counterfeiting crimes.

“Everyone must be able to have confidence that our notes and coins are authentic,” said Justice Minister Morgan Johansson (S ) in the press release.

The amendment would enter into force on 1 May in 2016.

Since the euro was introduced in 2002, money forgery meant losses of at least EUR 500 billion in the euro area, according to the Cabinet Office.
