The decision came after a conference in Geneva, but it was not immediately clear which countries promised what. According to Guterres played, however, Sweden and Germany crucial roles, writes AFP.

Germany, which received 80,000 Syrian refugees including 20,000 from UNHCR’s resettlement program, promised not direct more places, but said the country was waiting for EU and a more equitable distribution of refugees across Europe.

Sweden reported to have promised to accept 1,500 refugees by 2016 as part of the 1700-1900 quota refugees Sweden receives annually.

The UNCHR has urged countries to receive 130,000 of the 3.2 million Syrians who fled the civil war and are in neighboring Syria.
