This, combined with the teaching profession in many countries are not perceived as attractive creates problems, according to a report by the European network Eurydice.
– The problems exist in many countries, but conditions vary. Finland is usually seen as Europe’s best practices, while Sweden is among those who have serious problems, says the investigator Kate Sevón at Eurydice Sweden.
The aging of the teaching force is particularly noticeable in countries such as Italy and Germany, where 63 and 50 percent of teachers are older than 50 years. In Sweden, the corresponding proportion was 40 percent, slightly lower than the EU average.
Sweden, Slovakia and France have the largest proportion of teachers believe that their profession is not valued, which affects recruitment to teacher training.
Eurydice also indicate that a dozen countries have pushed or run campaigns to attract more people to the teaching profession. These include, among others, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Baltic countries.
The Eurydice includes the EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey.
