Threats and violence closes school in Malmo – Swedish YLE

A secondary school in Malmö have been forced to close due to security problems, reports the newspaper Sydsvenskan. Safety representatives from the teachers ‘unions Teachers’ Union and the National Union of Teachers decided to close Varner Ryden School in Rosengård on Friday.

The school is now closed until further notice and the ball rests with the employer, since it is only Arbetsmiljöverket that can lift the closure.

– We hope to have a meeting with the employer and initiate a plan for how problems to be addressed, says Catharina Niwhede, District of Teachers National Association in Malmö.

Problems with fractions and confined spaces

The decision to close the school came after a brawl between different groups of pupils on Friday. Threats, violence and the visit of criminal adults have been common at the school, but the problems are more fundamental than that, consider the tray.

– This is due to pushing too many students at the school since they shut Herb Garden School last fall and moved over to the students Varner Ryden School. We warned of this, and unfortunately got right, says Catharina Niwhede.

Niwhede says that conflicts between different groups of pupils has been a growing problem and that it has now gone so far that we can not guarantee the security of the school.

Some students may be turned off

The students have been told about the closure, but it is unclear where to go to school while Varner Ryden school is closed.

The program director Hans Nilsson says that some students may be suspended from school or transferring to other schools after high school reopens.

Now, the city of Malmö hire a security company to make the environment safer, writes news agency TT. The staff will also help with security and conflict management.
