Early Crane Dance at Hornborgasjön – Göteborgs-Posten

Thousands of cranes have already settled in the nature reserve at Hornborgasjön.

It is very early, says Åke Abrahamsson station manager at Hornborgasjöns field station, adding that they may be gone already for Easter weekend.

The first Cranes was sighted by the end of February at the rest area Pulken outside in Skåne Yngsjo. There, they made an early stop before heading on to Hornborgasjön.

Cranes dancing at Hornborgasjön is a traditional sign of spring, but the cranes themselves are possibly unaware of their role as messengers – their interest is to fatten to cope with the cold farther north where they fly to their breeding period.

Yesterday, over 9000 cranes reached Hornborgasjön. Normally, the birds most at the beginning of April, but Åke Abrahamsson says the highest figure recorded earlier and earlier in recent decades:

We expect to transport the move takes place ten to twelve days earlier then a few decades back. It depends on changes in climate and weather conditions.

In recent years, most 20000-30000 cranes gathered in the nature reserve before they fly on, and Åke Abrahamsson urge anyone who wants to view the spectacle that do not wait too long to go.

It is a great outdoor experience, he says.
