On the site has previously found evidence that water once existed on Mars.
Nitrogen is, like water, a necessary component of the kind of life we know. Nitrogen molecules are the building blocks of both DNA and RNA, the two chemical substances which encodes the structure of all living organisms.
It does not mean that the nitrogen molecules that are now found necessarily have a living origin. They may have arisen through non-biological processes. But they show that Mars long ago, when the planet was warmer and wetter, may have had the right conditions for the emergence of life.
