The Social Democrats have not yet decided whether to support such a proposal.
Standing Committee on Finance treated on Thursday Alliance parties’ request for the government to appoint a “framework Commission”. The Commission is supposed to review the principles that guide the government’s fiscal policy, including the target of public finances should aim for a surplus of one percent of GDP over the cycle.
Since even the Sweden Democrats support the Alliance’s line was decided that the Committee to take up a proposal for such an investigation.
– There is still a possibility for S to realize that it’s not too late to join. We see no intrinsic value in conflict on this issue, says Moderates economic political spokesman Ulf Krister Andersson.
The red-green government wants to replace the surplus target with a balansmål and has given NIER commissioned to investigate the consequences of such a change. Alliance parties believe that such a major change should be investigated together with the parliamentary parties.
Finance Committee chairman, social democrat Fredrik Olovsson, thinks it is still unclear what the Alliance parties really want to change in the fiscal framework. He claims that the investigation requirement is just a way for the Alliance parties to conceal that they themselves disagree on the surplus target. Olovsson also say that even if an investigation is added so the government can decide whether to replace the surplus target against a balansmål.
– The government can do this in the Budget, he said.
