A young man isolated on Friday at University Hospital infection clinic in Malmo, where they have taken samples of the Ebola virus.

Infectious Diseases were contacted by phone. A moment later came the young man to infection clinic direct input where he could be guided directly into a private room on the isolation ward.

– I can not deny that we have a case with some risk, says infectious disease physician Håkan Ringberg. There is no high-risk cases, but we have some extra precautions. Therefore, this patient is taken care of and insulated with the best possible practices.

Why do you think it might be Ebola?

– The patient came from a country of infection and fever. Otherwise it’s not really much to be said for Ebola. But in order not to risk anything so we check it.

Today there are clear procedures for medical staff to act when a patient with suspected Ebola infection enters.

– If there is a clear clinical picture as Ebola, then be patient to the special unit in Linköping directly. But, it is not at all about, but here it’s pretty low risk, says Håkan Ringberg. We have certain procedures that we follow, and this has gone according to plan. The patient lies on a private room on the isolation ward.

When do you know if he has Ebola?

– I do not know exactly when the sample is taken, but we anticipate that it may take a day before we have the test results. Then there is the clinics which are free to determine what other tests you take in the meantime. A much more common cause of fever when coming from these countries is the malaria. And it will of course examine during the evening. Then, maybe you are all second samples before you make Ebola sample, hopefully negative.

Are there special precautions for staff

– Yes. The patient was admitted directly from the outside and has not been included in any public premises whatsoever. And it has special safeguards for staff. It has some extra protection routines, various protective clothing and equipment. It is the ordinary infection staff attending the patient, but it is clear that such a patient requires more monitoring than other patients, so the need for staff increases.

After tomorrow, you know if it is Ebola?

– I do not want to say too much, but I expect an answer within 24 hours.
