Government proposes mobilfri school – Swedish Dagbladet

Government proposes mobilfri school – Swedish Dagbladet

– There are far too many students who do not concentrate on the lesson because they are playing on their phones or are active on social media, said Education Minister Jan Björklund (Liberal) to SVT.

The proposal is based on an investigation last LR-chairman Metta Fjelkner made on behalf of the government. The inquiry was ordered after the latest PISA study that showed that mess and late arrivals are common in Swedish schools than in the OECD as a whole. The study presented at a press conference today.

As the rules are written today, teachers have the right to be in charge of students’ mobiles on mobile usage has been disruptive. However, teachers are not entitled to collect cell phones for prevention.

Swedish Student unions think that the proposal is populist and jeopardize students’ legal certainty.

– We see that there are problems with the study environment at school , the we need to fix. But the solution is not to give teachers the right to confiscate pupils’ property against their will, says Mattias Hallberg, President of the Swedish student bodies.

Bjorklund must wake up now, he continues:

– The mobile phone is an obvious tool in modern society.

Ibrahim Baylan, Social Democrats’ education policy spokesperson, have nothing against it but says to SVT:

– More symbolic politics is not what will help the declining school performance and the decreasing equivalence. We must invest in smaller classes, more special education teachers and additional resources for the school.

Left Party’s education policy spokesperson Rossana Dinamarca designates the proposal as technology hostile, and says to SVT that it gives teachers a kind of policing role.
