The largest earthquake in 100 years – Västerbotten Courier

Local A Swedish conditions very strong earthquake occurred late in the evening in the Gulf of Bothnia. It is the largest earthquake in the region in over 100 years.

– It was an unusually large quakes to be in Sweden, says Björn Lund, a seismologist at Uppsala University, who now analyzed all data from the quake.

It had a magnitude of 3.9 and occurred between Piteå and Skellefteå, with its epicenter about five mil east into the Gulf of Bothnia at 16 kilometers deep. It felt even in parts of Ostrobothnia in Finland.

The quake occurred at 23 o’clock and it has been during the night has already been two aftershocks of a magnitude of around 2. It could come any further, according Björnlund.

“Very unusual”

North Coast area in Sweden are generally seismically active.

– But up to 4 has not been in this area for over 100 years, so it’s very unusual, says Björn Lund.

on average, we have only a magnitude 4 quakes per tenth year in Sweden, but in 2014 measured a quake south of Sveg up 4.1 and 2008 there was one in Skåne was 4.3.

– It is very exciting and interesting that we get a little bigger quakes. In this area, it is rather very small quake, when we talk magnitude 0-1 maybe, that does not at all feel, and then it is interesting that we have a major quakes in that area too, says Björn Lund.

seismologists will now analyze the quake further.

Terrified cats

Many felt the quake as large, but had it been on land had tremors have been much stronger.

– it sounded a bit like it was a huge truck came and drove and then shook the whole house, says John Andersson, 35, and musicians in Piteå, TT.

He was at home upstairs in his house. The quake lasted about ten seconds, he estimates.

– You heard very clearly how it walked. The cats were terrified, they came creeping into the bedroom.

– It was a bit cool actually, as a reminder of the forces of nature, says John Andersson.
