The King and Queen pays tribute to the efforts which, among others, MSF does in Ebola hit West Africa.
– I’m very proud of the people who dare to take the risk, says King Carl Gustaf said.
Last fall, shortly after the outbreak of the acute phase, informed the king about the situation at a meeting with Swedish actors. He also raised the disaster threat in his Christmas speech.
On Tuesday held a follow-up meeting at the Royal Palace. The King and Queen and Crown Princess Victoria received Cooperation Isabella Lövin (MP), public health, healthcare and Sports Minister Gabriel Wikström (S), government representatives and returning aid workers from Doctors Without Borders who told me about his work in Ebola-affected areas.
Nothing definite yet
The main message of the meeting was that the crisis is by no means over. While Ebola infection in Guinea and Liberia has slowed concerned about developments continue in parts of Sierra Leone.
– We can not exhale until the last case is identified, and all the contacts in that case is identified. Otherwise the risk is that Ebola is left as a natural disease among the population, such as malaria, for example, says Anna Jansson, who in November went to the Liberian capital Monrovia to work as an epidemiologist at the MSF clinic, on leave from his post at the Värmland County Council as cancer coordinator.
The operation in West Africa is the largest of the MSF with about 3,600 local staff and 300 international staff. Last year was about 40 of them Swedes.
– We should thank the staff from including Doctors without Borders have set up. It is always the worst for the first goes down and that might not really know what happens. They have a cold and is wonderfully dedicated people, the King said after the meeting at the palace.
The minister there
Sweden has contributed SEK 560 million to fight Ebola. Isabella Lövin plan to the next month visit to Sierra Leone and Liberia to the site to see how work is progressing and discuss how Sweden can help to build up the country again:
– They are not only affected by ebolan. The entire health system is down and also have fragile countries become so stigmatized by the disease. It’s important to get back industrial investors and tourists’ confidence, she says.
