– It will be easier and more convenient to travel, says Interior Minister Anders Ygeman (S).
The majority of EU countries participating in Schengen, but for travel to the UK , Ireland, Cyprus, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania Swedish travelers had to bring a passport.
Border controls in those countries will be left behind, but from July 1 this year should suffice a national identity card to prove who you are.
– It is simply something that should have been done long ago. It is a requirement we have from the EU, says Anders Ygeman.
This week examined the proposal by the council announcing that they will not object.
