The Swedish Government’s handling of the Sami are characterized by a lack of accountability and inaction, despite the fact that Sweden signed the UN Indigenous Declaration.
writes Archbishop Antje Jackelén DN Debate, facing the scrutiny United Nations Human Rights Council conducts. On Monday, the Cabinet Office questioned at the UN Office in Geneva on how Sweden lives up to human rights.
The Swedish Church has in his report to the UN agency criticized the government for lack of responsibility when it comes to indigenous rights.
The Archbishop proposes in the DN that the government should increase the Sami’s right to self-determination, strengthen their rights to land and water and make up with Sweden’s colonial past.
Jackelén is simultaneously self-critical of the role of the church played when it came to exert power and control over the Sami. During the year, a White Paper on the church’s treatment of indigenous peoples to be published, she promises.
