During the eight years of the Alliance Defending the Liberal Party has increasingly come to be associated with a single question: the school. Party leader Jan Björklund has assumed the role of contender education minister, during a period of increasing crisis in the Swedish school system.
It’s one of the reasons for the party’s poor election results and low poll numbers, says Jonas Hinnfors, statsvetarprofessor at Gothenburg University.
– It normally been an advantage for the Liberal Party, trust and profiling on campus, has enough instead become an impediment when it turned out that the school is so bad. FP and Bjorklund are so intimately associated with the school and slips it where it can also slip of the party, he said.
This alliance has – as well as government coalitions tend to make for smaller parties – limited The Liberal Party’s policy development, says Hinnfors. There has been a willingness by a phalanx to profile the party, inter alia, feminist and social policy issues and to return to the more social liberal tradition.
– The page has not been able to flourish in the Alliance, where the Christian Democrats acted as a pad. Instead, it has been perceived as something of a Single-issue politics, says Jonas Hinnfors.
Jan Björklund says not necessarily in the way of a possible development in the social liberal direction, says Hinnfors, but he can be too associated with the old line to be able to carry up such a change. The new integration policy proposals that FP leader presented have also pointed in another direction – and brought sharp internal criticism.
– Looking at the factors of poor election results, continued challenging public opinion position to become a Single-issue politics in the Alliance which associated with Jan Björklund. Then it is hard to resist the forces in the party who want to diversify and profile FP in a different way, says Jonas Hinnfors, and adds:
– It begins enough to burn a little, Bjorklund is perhaps on the way out.
Meanwhile, Thursday’s told that Göran Hägglund resigns as leader of the KD open up for those in FP that are critical of Bjorklund.
– This can make sure that people within the Liberal Party inspired by Göran Hägglund’s resignation and sets the corresponding issue within his own party, says political scientist Magnus Hagevi said.
– It would not be surprising if the same thing happened in the Liberal Party. It’s the same dynamic in which, says Jonas Hinnfors.
