To cut the umbilical cord late good for children’s health – the Swedish Radio

– It can help children get a better upbringing in so many parts of the world, without any cost, says Ola Andersson, one of the researchers behind the study.

Together with the nepalese researchers examined Uppsalaforskarna two groups of newborns in a maternity hospital in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. A group received umbilical cord cut off after a minute, and another group after three minutes.

It turned out that the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency at the age of eight months decreased by nine and 42 per cent among the children who avnavlades later.

– And since anemia is a very common condition in Nepal and in other low-income countries have large effects on children’s health, ” says Ola Andersson.

How does it affect a child’s development?

– If you have iron, and anemia when you are so small, it can be effects that are not possible to repair. Problems with, for example, even motor skills, how to control their muscles.

for few years ago it was unusual to have a late avnavling in Swedish maternity. Since then the guidelines changed and the majority now do that at a hospital, then waiting two-three minutes with the cut of the umbilical cord.

” It feels like the most natural. And then you have the research has shown that children need this ferrous blood, ” says the head of the maternity ward Ann Båth.

But on the other keep in the world, it is still early avnavling. The world health organisation recommends now that you wait a minute or longer to cut the umbilical cord. But Ola Andersson thinks that the recommendations may become evident.

” I hope that WHO and other organizations see that there is a value in extending this for another few minutes. There are those who claim that five to eight million children would no longer get anemia by this operation.
