Russian fires pollute the Swedish air – Vasterbotten Courier

Large forest fires in Ryssand affecting both health and the environment in the Nordic countries, according to a new research report from the Nordic Council of Ministers.

While the Russian peasant habit burning forest and crop residues contributing significantly to pollution of the air over the northern hemisphere.

After the great forest fire that in 2006 devastated over a 20,000 square kilometer area in Russia was found large concentrations of black carbon, ground level ozone and nitrogen in the North Scandinavia and Finland. Rare high nitrogen deposition affected Jämtland and high levels of hazardous particles were measured both in Stockholm and in southern Finland.

The report urges politicians in the Nordic countries help Russia to limit fires. Russia needs support to prevent the risk of fires and to encourage their farmers to stop burning crop residues.
