Drug-related deaths have increased in Sweden. Worst hit last year were Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Skåne.

Drug-related deaths have increased by 30 per cent in the whole country the past year, according to statistics from the National Board. Total registered 589 drug-related deaths in 2013 and the figure rose to 765 deaths a year later.

– This is the largest increase ever, says Jesper Hörnblad, an investigator at the National Board, the News Agency Siren.



Most cases in Stockholm

Most cases in the country was recorded in Stockholm County, where 187 deaths were drug-related, 2014. After Stockholm, the Västra Götaland and Skåne counties worst hit with 129 and 111 registered drug-related deaths last year. In all three counties, the number of cases from the year before.

– Some of the increase may be due to better analysis in forensic medicine. It can also be due to increased substance abuse, says Jesper Hörnblad News Agency Siren.



The largest percentage increase in Halland

The largest percentage increase in drug-related deaths were in Halland, where only eight cases was registered in 2013 against 20 cases last year. In Gotland figure fell in percentage terms the most, from eleven to three deaths last year.
