People Party’s leader challenged the former Minister for EU Affairs Birgitta Ohlsson.

Västerbotten party districts is the first district that has nominated Ohlsson instead Björklund to the post of party leader:

Västerbotten party districts are the first in Sweden to nominate former EU Minister Birgitta Ohlsson as the new leader of the Liberal Party.

On 20 August, the last nomination day and so far, the current party leader Jan Björklund has remained unchallenged, even in heavy party districts that Skåne and Gothenburg. All but Västerbotten has nominated him as a candidate, according to TT.

– There was a fairly strong majority of the Board of Birgitta Ohlsson. There is no censure Björklund, he was the second candidate that we chose from, but Birgitta had the strongest support, says Cecilia Festin-Stenlund, vice president of the county association of Västerbotten.

“A breath of fresh air”

– She’s a breath of fresh air, an innovator. The reasoning was that if one is to think of renewal, one must also consider new names and Birgitta Ohlsson is a name that the committee must consider and respect.

Birgitta Ohlsson got more personal check than Jan Björklund at the party’s Stockholm list in parliamentary elections and has previously been identified as a challenger to Björklund. She has remained low and did not say if she’s interested or not.
