In the afternoon, a memorial in central Gothenburg to honor and pay attention to the nearly 3,000 Roma who were killed in a single night in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The ceremony will be held at 15:00 in the afternoon in Bältespännarparken. It is the first time such a ceremony is held in Gothenburg.
– The most important is to disseminate information and to commemorate the memory of the Roma who were victims of the Holocaust, says Ingrid Schiöler that is representative of the Roma Council in Gothenburg.
2 897 Roma people, mostly women and children, were all killed during the night between 2 and 3 August 1944. Then the so-called “Gypsy family camp” at Auschwitz-Birkenau was emptied.
In addition to honoring the victims are today’s memorial also an opportunity to raise the debate on human rights in view of the increased discrimination to and persecution faced by Roma people right now think Ingrid Schiöler.
