Parents have less track than they think – Sveriges Radio

Several times during the school years, 1400 students from 21 schools responded to Swedish researcher Jonas Berges issues if they tried tobacco, alcohol and drugs. At the same time parents specify what they thought their youngsters made, then compared the answers.

– It was known previously that adolescents drink more than what parents think. But now that we have numbers on it, one can see that the differences are greater than previously could maybe think.

In seventh grade did only six percent of parents of students who had drunk himself intoxicated that they made it. In ninth grade, it was 26 percent. It may be that the parents of the younger ones are more unprepared, says Jonas Berge.

In a particular group of young people were more parents who had an eye:

– For example, one can see that the parents of the children who are more high-performing school tend to have a poorer knowledge of the children smoke or drink, and we were quite surprised.

Saga and Elsa attending eighth grade think it is common for teenagers blinds that they drink alcohol.

– about they are home alone, it’s easy to obtain. You know usually where there is alcohol and such somewhere.

Do you speak and your friends with your parents about alcohol?

– Yes. So my parents took it up for at least a week ago, it is important that the type does not fall for peer pressure.

According to the researchers play the smaller role of the parent is permissive or strict . It’s more about what you do than what you say.

– I think that parents especially may affect kids’ drinking and smoking through their own way of relating to alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

There is such a thing as the mother Mona Vendlegård already thought of, though his son Ted has a few years left to junior high school.

– If you do not offer alcohol at home. The aim would be to defuse it. But research shows that it is the opposite. We have not so much at home and would not bid on it either.
