A scientific article about the transplant of trachea at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg withdrawn, reports Dagens Medicin.
The reason is that the first author contacted the magazine tissue Engineering Part a with the desire to replace one of the pictures in the article, with the justification that the image appeared in another work by the research team. This very unusual request brought the journal’s suspicions. Last week came the decision to withdraw the article that was published in 2013.
The article described the surgery was performed in 2011 on a 76-year-old patient with an injury to the windpipe and increasing breathing problems. Sahlgrenska doctors transplanted a stamcellsbesådd windpipe from a dead donor, a method now most linked to the controversial surgeon Paolo Macchiarini.
The patient died after 23 days. The hospital is investigating whether surgery decision arrived at in the right way.
