Cod in the Baltic Sea should be labeled – Sveriges Radio

There is a new report conducted by Havsmiljöinstitutet showing that cod declined sharply in number.

Per Mosknes works as environmental analyst at the Institute, and says it is concerned about the reason behind the decrease.

– That is a little strange. The first thing to suspect is that fishing pressure, after all, has been too high. But it happens much more in the Baltic Sea now, the cod is lean and has switched places where it is at.

– It happens many different things at the same time in the Baltic Sea and it is a complex issue. It is a little unsure if it’s just fishing is the culprit behind this.

The questions regarding Baltic cod actual health involves scientists from countries around the Baltic Sea will now begin to notice individual cods. This is to see how the fish lives and moves in the Baltic Sea.

– The method is that you will notice a lot out of Cods with different types of label stock that little plastic tags and more. And then re-captures to a certain percentage. Based on the attempt to then calculate how many cod actually are and how many have been lost because of fishing and other mortality.

But the method requires that a large number of fish marked dying to get a fair estimate.

– But this requires notice very many fish to get good estimates of this, says Mosknes.
