Margot Wallström did nothing illegal – Sveriges Radio

Our reporter Helena Broström know more about this. And she tells us which apartment it is about:

This apartment is located in central Stockholm and is owned by the Municipal Workers’ Union. And they rent it out to Margot Wallström.

Now, a prosecutor investigated whether this was legal or not. What crime did the prosecutor that it could be about?

He thought that perhaps it was bribery.

What?

a bribe can be for example if someone pays money or expensive gifts to politicians to influence the decisions politician should make.

the prosecutor wondered if the Municipal maybe helped Wallström to find an apartment to she then would be grateful and later helping Municipal in any way.

nothing criminal

So this was no bribery .

That’s right. The prosecutor has asked over 20 people for this apartment. Now, says the prosecutor that Margot Wallström did not do anything illegal. For the prosecutor believes that this is not hung up with Wall’s job in the government.

The prosecutor also said that there could be other explanations for why Wallström got the apartment. What then?

Margot Wallström is a member of the Social Democratic Party and there is close cooperation between the Social Democrats and several unions, including the Municipal. So that cooperation could be an explanation for why she had to hire union’s apartment.

Maybe dwellings in the future

Can what has happened to affect the future?

Yes, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven says that in the future the government should perhaps have official residences.

What is it?

It would then be houses or apartments where politicians would be able to stay
during the time they are government ministers. For politicians in government come from different parts of Sweden and many of them need time to have somewhere to stay when they are working in Stockholm.

Even today, the Prime Minister has an official residence.

Yes, it is. The Prime Minister will stay in the Sager Palace which is just next to the Reichstag parliament building and government offices in the building Rosenbad.

Why would Stefan Löfven that more ministers would be able to get official residence?

in this housing is a sensitive issue. It’s very difficult to find available apartments in central Stockholm. And it has happened several times that politicians have been criticized because they would have found their homes in a strange or immoral ways.

But if there were official residences of the ministers in the government maybe they would not have to make such criticism , is now hoping Stefan Löfven.
