Analysis: Political pressure was Wallström on gridiron – Sveriges Radio

Still, it’s obviously a great relief for both the Foreign Minister and the government as a whole that the unexpectedly protracted investigation received an end. Wallström has from the start been high and confident tail carriage in question. Both by accusing Municipal to tell lies and by being rock assured that she would be freed.

At first it took more than Wallström easy on the prosecutor’s inquiry. Similar previous cases, after quite a short time stopped the killing. The consensus was that it would soon be over.

But as the investigation dragged on increased nervousness in the government camp. Not only that investigators interrogated a few dozen people. They also went through a large number of documents, including government decisions.

The whisper in the Cabinet that this might, after all, could end badly. A prosecution would have meant that one of government’s key ministers had been forced out. A Wallström-departure had been significantly heavier than the Prime Minister Mehmet Kaplan’s exit.

It is difficult to rid themselves of the idea that political pressure influenced the investigation. Criticism of both the Municipal and Margot Wallström was massive in January. Not only political opponents but also some lawyers were quick to judge. Margot Wallström is one of government’s most powerful and also the most controversial ministers. The prosecutor came under pressure. Whatever decision he took would be criticized and then it became more important to be able to show that the investigation has been made carefully.

According to information received prosecutor also various “tips” to investigate. Probably from political opponents Wallström who like to have seen a prosecution. This probably contributed to the investigation dragged on.

But Wallström can not breathe out so long. The next big test for the foreign minister is certainly not legal but nevertheless one of her major political trials. The week after midsummer settled on Sweden, the government sought after place in the UN Security Council. No prosecutor is involved this time. Nevertheless, many will be quick to direct accusations against the foreign minister if she fails.
