Inger Melander, an expert on fisheries at WWF, said that the previous strong cod stock in the Barents Sea is given a yellow light in the year.
– It’s a bit weaker this year. One sees that the growth is not as it should and you see an increase in fishing mortality.
And we are talking still about cod as many had previously perceived as viable and as a good stocks?
– That’s right. But, in that it has a relatively high fishing pressure, so it also affects the stock, says Inger Melander.
It was previously cod stocks weak in the Baltic Sea, and it does not look better. Otherwise, the development of the sector in many ways in the right direction according to the World Wildlife Fund, which in this year’s guide gives the green light to more species than previously, six out of ten.
The reason for this is mainly that more fishing is environmentally certified.
– As the certifications we get clearer traceability, you look over the management and control, trying to reduce the negative ecosystem impact, says Inger Melander.
the West Coast shrimp, who some years ago had a red light, now get the green light in this year’s guide.
– now you’ve worked to get to an MSC certification. It went through last October. The stock is still a little weak. But with that it now works with control and that it had reduced the drafts of the small shrimp, which need to be left in the sea and reproduce, so moving in the right direction, Inger Melander.
