Pedophile Researchers hope the grass roots – Aftonbladet

Research. By asking the public about money hoping psychiatrist Christopher Rahm conduct a study on pedophiles. The urge to commit violence will be reduced – with the help of a preparation against prostate cancer.

For the first time, Swedish researchers hope to conduct a clinical study using crowdfunding. The hope is to test whether a product normally used at prostate cancer can prevent pedophiles from committing abuses against children.

– It is a completely new approach. Instead of entering when the damage is already done and the child has been abused, we want to test whether it is possible to prevent it from happening at all, says the scientist behind the project, the psychiatrist Christopher Rahm at the Karolinska Institute, said.

The desire remains

the substance degarelix reduces the levels of the “male” hormone testosterone and it is in the acute phase, when the risk of abuse is greatest, which patients should be treated.

Since 2012, there is a helpline at the Karolinska University hospital, where individuals with “unwanted sex” can call. So far, around 1500 people dialed in.

– This shows that many want help. But this is nothing preparations against pedophilia. Ignition pattern persists, despite treatment. What we want to test is whether it is possible to influence the impulse to commit abuses, says Christoffer Rahm.

So far, a handful of the 60 pedophiles to be included in the study were recruited. About half receive preparation as an injection, the other half receive saline solution.

Unique financing

– Our hypothesis is that the effect comes after about two weeks and that it is in about three months, says Christoffer Rahm.

the study is funded in a unique way for Sweden. By appealing to the public for money through the UK site Walacea, a site for grassroots funding research, hope Christoffer Rahm collect the equivalent 38,000 pounds, about 430 000.

– I have received money from four foundations, including the Swedish Society for medical research, but it is not enough. This money will cover the costs of a research nurse, blood samples, medicine, and so on.
