Mixed views about failure handshake – Expressen

To shake hands or not? Green Party Yasri Khan’s response to the question led to he had to leave all of their political duties.

The choice not to shake hands with women is rare, according to representatives of Muslim religious organizations. But they defend at the same time yasri khan.

– I do not think it’s a big gender thing if he shakes hands with me or not. For me, it’s almost silly, says Sarah Delshad, founder of the Muslim feminists.

During an interview on outgoing party colleague Mehmet Kaplan refused Yasri Khan shaking hands with TV4 reporter because of religious reasons. Criticism did not wait to .

High school and education initiative Minister AIDA HADZIALIC, S, called it unacceptable and several ecologists questioned sharply why yasri khan proposed to take place in the Green Party party executive.

He then left all his political duties.

– I have always believed and thought that it is not how to greet, but to greet. That it is showing respect. Equality and such, my assessment is that equality is judged based on how often you shake hands, saying yasri khan.

‘Different yardsticks “

The default handshake evokes both anger and förundring. For Muslim believers, both men and women, it is not unknown, although it is rare, according to representatives of religious organizations.

Elvir Gigovic is chairman of the Swedish Muslim Council, an umbrella organization of several Muslim member organizations together has about 70 000 members. He is upset over how Muslims publicly exposed and misunderstood.

– There are different yardsticks to use against various groups. It begins to show a pattern and it gives enough arguments to extreme forces that will profit from this, he said.

Critical towards the majority society

Elvir Gigovic shake yourself hand with both women and men, on Wednesday night at a dinner with the Archbishop, but believes that such religious expression should be tolerated. But it does not make it in Swedish society today.

– The majority society have difficulty taking in this, they interpret it based on standards and are difficult to bring in alternative approaches. I do not think a no handshake will be driven to the point that they are excluded from the political process. But there may be Muslims, even Yasri in this case, be self-critical, he says.

And realize the handshake in Swedish society?

– To society is not fully capable to bring in a diversity, even though we want to believe it.

But it’s not about that it therefore treats men and women differently?

– Those who follow this principle in Islam does not unidirectional. Women do not touch nor men. It signals therefore not gender power structure, but it is about the perception of sexuality, says Elvir Gigovic.

“No big gender thing”

Sarah Delshad is the founder of the organization Muslim feminists and freelance journalist. She is disappointed in the Green Party for criticism yasri khan. While she defends him.

– I myself have met Yasri and myself have suffered the same thing that the journalist TV4. I did not some kind of kränkthet. He put his hand on his chest and greeted in their own way, and then I greet in the same way. The most important thing for me was that he looked me in the eyes and greeted says Sarah Delshad.

Hello and handskaket is a very fundamental part of the interaction between people. Can you be for equality while not greet men and women the same way?

– It is incredibly fascinating how to put an equal sign between the external attributes and actions with gender equality. I do not think it’s a big gender thing if he shakes hands with me or not. For me, it’s almost silly.

How common is it to not shake hands with women because of religious beliefs, would you say?

– The of course, depends on what context you move. It exists, but is incredibly unusual. I may have met there a few times and then I have still been very active in many different arenas. He really stands out, she said.
