A new case of anthrax has been found close to Omberg in Östergötland, state Agriculture Department.

Trying to trace the source
A total of nine cases of anthrax found in the area in the summer. The source is still unknown. It is equally important to find the propagation path, as the primary source explains Lotta Andersson.
– It is not certain that we will find the primary source, therefore we try to find the propagation path to break it that way, she says.
Ruminants are susceptible to anthrax because they often touch the ground with their noses and then encounter infectious agents.
– Primary source can for example be at old anthrax cadavers that have been in the ground since long. The spores can live for up to 50 years. It happens when it is dry and hot, it may come up through cracks in the ground, says Lotta Andersson.
20 persons medicated
Anthrax has been in the area historically. Animals on the farm where the cow was found dead vaccinated. Even animals on other farms vaccinated.
– The risk to humans is not great. Those at risk are pet owners and veterinarians who come into contact with dead animals. They are treated with antibiotics, says Lotta Andersson and states that some 20 people after Omberg outbreak medication.
Walkers will call
The surroundings of Omberg is popular to walk in. Now is invited visitors to respect the cordoned-off places – to minimize the risk of contamination. Agriculture Department says that it is completely safe to eat meat and other food produced in the area.
