Gothenburg can get “Subway” – Sveriges Radio

– It is about combining tramway and railway, and it is done in a number of places, both in Denmark and Germany, says Henrik Munck to echo.

– So it’s about being able to run on tram tracks where we have good tram tracks outside the city, and to use the infrastructure that we plan to be here, called West Link.

The new train tunnel?

– Exactly. They together constitute 90 percent of a metro system for Gothenburg. It is a new variant, but proven technology.

Trams and buses jostle for space in the Gothenburg public transport hubs; Brunnsparken. A new metro-like transport system would inter alia relieve Brunnsparken.

The idea is to use so-called duovagnar that can run on both railway and tram lines, including the upcoming train tunnel West Link. Autumn investigation will look into whether Västlänken able to swallow even a kind of metro, alongside the commuter and regional trains, which Henrik Munck think is possible.

Traffic Board Vice Chairman deems it some new traffic system in Gothenburg will cost billions, but not tens of billions, because they largely use existing or already planned infrastructure.

– A rock tunnel, is what we need to supplement Västlänken with. It is much cheaper than digging in the mud. So in this context is the relatively limited costs, says Henrik Munck.

Gothenburg has investigated the full-scale metro at least a couple of occasions, both in the 1930s and 1960s. This resulted in a big nothing. Why would they become the “workshop” this time?

– The main difference is that here is an opportunity to do this, without digging up the entire city. I think most people in Gothenburg, although they are aware of the problems with public transport … I believe that you are not willing for us to dig up the entire city, not just the few places in the Western Link. Can you find a solution when we do not need to do it, it is a new opportunity.

The new investigation of a metro-like traffic in Gothenburg is supposed to be completed in December this year.
